Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm pressure to reach the muscle layers beneath the surface, which is why it is the treatment that works on knots that keep coming back. Julia works into the connective tissue with deliberate strokes, holding pressure where a muscle has locked tight, until it begins to release. It is not a fast treatment and it is not meant to feel like a surface rub. The point is to get to the layer where the problem actually lives. Most people book it for the knot between the shoulder blades that returns every Wednesday, the lower back that seizes after a long week at a desk, or the hip that has been quietly stiff for months. You will likely feel the work during the session, and some soreness the next day is normal, but the mobility that follows is what brings people back. If you are managing a diagnosed condition or an injury, speak to your GP or physiotherapist as well as booking with us.

What it helps with

The problems this treatment is built for.

Chronic knots that return

Sustained pressure into the fibres of a locked muscle, held long enough for it to let go rather than just feel better for an hour.

Lower back and hip stiffness

Work into the glutes, lower back and the muscles around the pelvis that seize up after days of sitting.

Restored range of motion

When a tight muscle releases, the joint it was pulling on moves freely again. That is the measure of a good session.

Desk-bound shoulder tension

The upper back and shoulders take the weight of hours at a screen. Deep tissue addresses the thickness that builds there over weeks.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Does deep tissue massage hurt?

It should feel intense and productive, not painful. Julia works to your tolerance and checks in throughout. You are always able to ask for less pressure. A good deep tissue session sits right on the edge of discomfort without crossing into pain, because crossing that line makes muscles tighten rather than release.

How sore will I be afterwards?

Some soreness for a day or two is normal, rather like the ache after unaccustomed exercise. Drinking water, gentle movement and a warm shower help. The soreness gives way to looseness and better range of motion. If soreness lasts more than 48 hours, tell Julia at your next visit.

How often should I come?

For a long-standing complaint, weekly or fortnightly for the first few sessions gets the tissue changing, then we space sessions out as the problem settles. For maintenance, most people settle on every four to six weeks. Julia will advise a realistic plan after the first session.

Is it right for chronic lower back pain?

It often helps, because chronic lower back pain is frequently muscular. Deep tissue can release the muscles that have been holding the strain. That said, if your back pain is from a diagnosed disc, nerve or joint issue, speak to your GP or physiotherapist as well as booking with us, so the massage supports rather than conflicts with your care.

“Professional and tailored the massage to my specific needs, in a clean and hygienic studio.”
